Mulla, Ali, "Electroencephalographic correlates of spatial attention index the degree of online control in goal-directed reaching" (2012). Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository. Paper 567. Abstract Goal-directed reaches performed with limb vision (i.e., closed-loop: CL) are more accurate than their limb occluded (i.e., open-loop: OL) counterparts. This finding is frequently attributed to the use of online limb vision to effect trajectory amendments. Notably, however, the central planning of CL and OL reaches may also influence trajectory control. To that end, I examined the behavioural and event-related brain potentials (ERP) of reaches in a target perturbation paradigm wherein information regarding the nature of response (CL or OL) was provided prior to response cuing. CL reaches exhibited earlier and more effective trajectory amendments than OL reaches. Moreover, CL and OL reaches differed with regard to ERP components related to the allocation of visuospatial attention (i.e., the N1) and visuomotor integration (i.e., the P2). These results suggest that advanced knowledge related to the availability of online limb vision increases the visuospatial processing of the reaching limb and optimizes trajectory amendments.

Response of the Pre-oriented Goal-directed Attention to Usual and Unusual Distractors: A Preliminary Study
Introduction: In this study, we investigated the distraction power of the unusual and usual images on the attention of 20 healthy primary school children. Methods: Our study was different from previous ones in that the participants were asked to fix the initial position of their attention on a pre-defined location after being presented with unusual images as distractors. The goals were prese...

Nowadays most of the day today services we receive are based upon computer systems. Services such as information searching or online shopping are considered among the most frequent online information systems' services. Users assess and process the information they receive from information systems. The theory of mind information processing asserts that humans process and analyze the information ...
متن کاملAttentional landscapes in reaching and grasping
It is well established that during the preparation and execution of goal-directed movements, perceptual processing is biased towards the goal. Most of the previous work on the relation between action and attention has focused on rather simple movements, such as single saccades or manual reaches towards a single target. Here we review recent behavioural and neurophysiological studies on manual a...
متن کاملEEG neural correlates of goal-directed movement intention
Using low-frequency time-domain electroencephalographic (EEG) signals we show, for the same type of upper limb movement, that goal-directed movements have different neural correlates than movements without a particular goal. In a reach-and-touch task, we explored the differences in the movement-related cortical potentials (MRCPs) between goal-directed and non-goal-directed movements. We evaluat...
